The National Doctoral Program in Virus Infections and Pandemics (NDP-VIP) is a joint initiative of nine Swedish universities promoting training and recruitment of PhD students and postdocs in virology and pandemic preparedness. In the end of 2024, the NDP-VIP organization was awarded funding from VR for the coming 4 years (2025-2028). The NDP-VIP organization is affiliated with UCMR (Umeå Centre for Microbial Research) and is also supported by MIMS (Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, Umeå University).
NDP-VIP will offer advanced level courses taught by renowned national and international researchers providing current knowledge on each topic. The research school will host national infection biology network meetings, where these emerging researchers present their work to the infection biology community. These activities aim to strengthen both Swedish and global networks, facilitate knowledge exchange, and foster cross-disciplinary research and innovation. In summary, the NDP-VIP program will enhance the quality of research in infection biology in Sweden and will contribute to worldwide initiatives to fight viral infections and ensure pandemic preparedness by fostering the training of the next generation of researchers.
Examples of courses and workshops:
- Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis
- Viral Pandemics and Pandemic Preparedness
- Clinical and Translational Virology
- Vaccine Development
- Antivirals – mechanisms, resistance, and innovation
- Highly Pathogenic Viruses: from detection to treatment
- Zoonotic and Emerging Viruses
- Tumor Virology
- Glycovirology
- Advanced Methods in Virology
- Mosquito-borne Viruses and their Vectors
- Molecular Epidemiology and Sequencing Tools usedn in Pathogen Outbreaks
PhD students and postdoctoral fellows may become full NDP-VIP members if they are enrolled at a Swedish university/institute and if they are active in research on virus infections and/or pandemics.
PhD students and postdoctoral fellows enrolled at a university/institute outside of Sweden can apply for an associate membership.
